Before You Match

✓ Reverse image search their photos

Right-click any profile photo and use Google Images or TinEye to check if it's stolen from elsewhere. Catfishes typically use model photos or stolen Instagram pics. If their main photo appears on 50 websites — walk away.

✓ Google their name + city

A real person leaves a trail — LinkedIn, Facebook, an old Reddit post, a business listing. If a search returns nothing at all, that's unusual.

✓ Check for Instagram/TikTok consistency

Anyone who's active on social media will have some public presence. Ask for a handle and verify it actually belongs to them (check post dates, tagged locations, consistent face).

✓ Video call before meeting in person

A 5-minute video call eliminates 90% of catfishes immediately. Anyone who consistently refuses or makes excuses has something to hide.

🛡️

Protect Your Information

✓ Never share your home address early

This should be obvious, but many people slip up when planning a first date. Meet somewhere public. Don't give your exact address to someone you haven't met.

✓ Don't give your full name until you trust them

A first name is fine. Your full name + city + job is enough to find your LinkedIn, which leads to your workplace, which is enough for someone with bad intentions.

✓ Use a Google Voice number (or similar) for first contact

Your real phone number can reveal your name and location through reverse lookup services. A secondary number protects you without seeming paranoid.

✓ Be careful with financial information

Romance scams cost Americans $1.3 billion in 2023. Anyone who asks for money, crypto, or gift cards — no matter how good the story — is almost certainly a scammer.

📍

First Dates

✓ Meet in a public place

Coffee shops, restaurants, parks. Never a private home, their car, or an isolated location on a first meeting.

✓ Tell someone where you're going and who you're meeting

Send a screenshot of their profile to a friend or family member. Tell them when you expect to be back. Enable location sharing temporarily if you have it.

✓ Arrange your own transport

Drive yourself or use Uber/Lyft. Never accept a ride from someone you've only just met — it removes your ability to leave when you want.

✓ Trust your gut, leave immediately if uncomfortable

If something feels off — their behaviour, the venue, the vibe — leave. You don't owe an explanation. A real person will understand. An unsafe one will pressure you to stay.

⚠️

Spot Romance Scams

✓ They live far away and can never meet

Military overseas, oil rig, working abroad — classic scam scenarios. They're always 'about to visit' but something always comes up.

✓ They escalate emotionally very fast

Telling you they love you within days or weeks. Proposing a shared future quickly. This is love bombing — used by both narcissists and scammers to build false intimacy before the ask.

✓ They ask for money — any amount, any reason

Medical emergency, flight home, stuck at customs, investment opportunity. It starts small and escalates. The FBI's IC3 reports the average romance scam victim loses $10,000+.

✓ They avoid video calls with excuses

Camera broken, bad connection, work rules. Every excuse you hear. This is the single clearest sign of a catfish or scammer.

🆘 If Something Happens

🇺🇸 USA: Report romance scams to FTC and the FBI's IC3.

🇬🇧 UK: Report to Action Fraud (0300 123 2040).

🇦🇺 Australia: Report to Scamwatch.

🌍 Global: Contact your local cybercrime unit or consumer protection agency. Screenshots of all conversations are critical evidence.
